Our Story

St. John the Divine is a growing parish in the heart of Sun City Center. Our parish is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida and a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion.

At the center of this parish is Jesus Christ – His life, death, and resurrection. Our mission as articulated in the Book of Common Prayer is to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ" We live into this mission by offering engaging and diverse worship, lifelong formation, and caring for all people. Through this mission St. John’s is becoming a parish where all may know and share the love, mercy, forgiveness, and fellowship of Jesus Christ.
As a parish grounded in the Holy Scriptures and firmly anchored in the Anglican tradition of worship, theology, and piety expressed in the Book of Common Prayer our faith can be best be summarized by the words of the historic Nicene Creed.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Redeemer is known throughout the area and beyond for its focus on worship, preaching, music, faith formation, youth and families, and community outreach.
Redeemer’s roots in Sarasota trace back to the late 1880s. During the early years, Episcopalians worshipped in the parlor of John Hamilton Gillespie’s home on Palm Avenue, near where the current church stands. In 1904, Gillespie built Redeemer’s first church building in his back yard. After expanding the structure several times, Redeemer decided to build a new modified-Gothic-style church at 222 South Palm Avenue. It held its first services in the church in 1950 and continues to host about 600 services each year.
