Acolytes serve at the altar on Sundays and at other services during the year. An acolyte may carry the cross or a torch and assist the priest in preparing for communion. Acolytes are vested for the service.
To become an acolyte at St. John the Divine, a person must be at least 10 years old and have a sincere desire to serve at the altar. Through training and serving, acolytes develop a disciplined approach to prayer and a sense of the importance of liturgy in the life of a Christian.
